On December 6, 1941, America was a nation at peace with a military ranked 14th in size behind Sweden. All that changed the next morning after a Japanese strike force of 353 aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor. The attack:
- Killed 2,403 U.S. personnel, including 68 civilians;
- Destroyed or damaged 19 U.S. Navy ships, including 8 battleships; and
- Awakened a sleeping giant.
