This is a day seared into the American psyche, but its influence goes far beyond just that day and includes tragedies in Chile and Libya.

Words do little to convey the shock, pain and loss endured by Americans on September 11, 2001.  I spoke with five people who were in New York and Washington for a reflection on 9/11 for my radio show on the 12th anniversary in 2013.

1973

US Backed Coup Installs Chilean Dictator

A U.S. backed coup in Chile ousted President Salvador Allende and installed a military regime led by General Augusto Pinochet that would remain in power until 1990.  Pinochet arrested, tortured and killed political opponents.

 

2012

Benghazi Attack

Armed militants attack the U.S. consultant in Benghazi, Libya.  Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed.
