May-21: A Day of Debuts and Bloodshed

This day marks the anniversary of the opening of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, which is fitting for a day marked by debuts (Democratic National Convention, the Red Cross, FIFA) and  tragic deaths at home and abroad.


First Democratic Convention

The first Democratic National Convention was held in The Athenaeum and Warfield’s Church, Baltimore.  The convention selected a ticket of President Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren which would go on to win in November.  Baltimore would host the first six conventions and eight of its first twelve  Only Chicago has hosted more conventions.  This year’s convention is in Philadelphia which has hosted two prior conventions.


Clara Barton Founds American Red Cross

After gaining recognition for her heroic efforts on the battlefield as a nurse wehre she wasa known as he “Angel of the Battlefield,” Clara Barton traveled to Geneva, Switzerland and was introduced to the Red Cross.  She would found and lead the American Red Cross from 1881 to 1904.



FIFA Founded

FIFA was founded in 1904 to oversee international competition among the national associations of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Headquartered in Zürich, its membership now comprises 210 national associations.  FIFA has been embroiled in scandal amidst allegations of bribery.


Sada Abe Arrested

Sada Abe erotically asphyxiated her lover.  Before fleeing she cut off his penis and testicles and carried them with her.   As odd as that sounds, even odder was that the penis was later put on display at Tokyo University’s pathology museum.



Yuba City Bus Crash Kills 28

A bus for the Yuba City High School a cappella choir drove off a brige and crashed 21.6 feet below, killing 28 of the 52 passengers.



White Night Riots

San Francisco’s gay community rioted after the acquittal of former City Supervisor Dan White of murder and mere convicted for involuntary manslaughter in the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk based on his infamous Twinkie Defense.  It was most violent reaction by gay Americans since the 1969 Stonewall Riots.

White served five years of a seven-year prison sentence. Less than two years after his release, he returned to San Francisco and committed suicide


Fmr. Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Ghandi Assassinated

Former Indian Prime Minister and 14 others were killed in a suicide bombing in Tamil Nadu by a member of the Tamil Tigers involved in the Sri Lankan civil war .


Algerian Monks Beheaded

Seven monks from the Atlas Abbey of Tibhirine in Algeria belonging to the Roman Catholic Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (known as Trappists) were beheaded by Islamic rebels nearly two months after being kidnapped during the Algerian Civil War. Their finals days was portrayed in the 2010 French movie “Of Gods and Men”.



9-11 Memorial Opened

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum opened to the public.
