April 30 marks the downfall of Adolph Hitler and the South Vietnamese government, as well as the breaking of the story of torture at Abu Ghraib prison.
Hitler Commits Suicide
With Berlin about to fall to the Russians and only forty hours after marrying Eva Braun, Hitler shot himself and Braun took cyanide in a double suicide. Their bodies were burned per his wishes.
On this day, North Vietnamese tanks smashed through the gates of the presidential palace. South Vietnamese President Minh was waiting for them at the palace steps. “I have been waiting since early this morning to transfer power to you.” However, the reply was “There is no question of your transferring power. Your power has crumbled. You cannot give up what you do not have.” The 20-year Vietnam War was now over. In Vietnam, this day is celebrated as Reunification Day, but among foreign Vietnamese, it is known as a National Day of Shame.
Abu Ghraib Story Breaks
Photographs of torture and abuse by U.S. personnel against Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison were first released. Eleven U.S. soldiers were convicted of various offenses.
