January 23: Icons That Rock
Fr. John Carroll founds Georgetown University, the first Catholic university in the United States. The school’s alumni includes 10 heads of state (including President Bill Clinton) and countless cabinet secretaries, ambassadors, members of Congress, judges and at least one web radio host.
The school’s motto is “Hoya Saxus” which loosely translated means “What Rocks”
Madeleine Albright becomes the first woman to serve as United States Secretary of State. Albright, who was a member of the Georgetown faculty prior to going into the government is now Professor of International Relations Georgetown University‘s Walsh School of Foreign Service.
