1976 – Roots
The TV mini-series “Roots,” based on the Alex Haley novel, began airing on ABC. The mini-series was watched by an estimated 130[ and 140[ million viewers total and averaged a 44.9 rating 66% share of the audience. The final episode was watched by 100 million viewers and an average of 80 million viewers watched each of the last seven episodes. Eighty-five percent of all television homes saw all or part of the mini-series. The show, which is still the 3rd-highest rated U.S. television program, received 37 Emmy Award nominations and won 9. 2005 – Johnny Carson Dies
The comic who had a 30-year run as host of the Tonight Show from beautiful downtown Burbank and hosted the Academy Awards five times died at the age of 79.
