Dec 8: The Day the Music Died . . . and Was Born

The Day the Music Died . . . and Was Born

I was 17 years old watching the New England Patriots play their nemesis — the Miami Dolphins o– n Monday Night Football in a must-win game for the Patriots.  With seconds to play, a the Patriots set to kick the game-winning field goal, Howard Cosell announced to the world that John Lennon had been shot and killed.  I was a huge John Lennon fan and was shocked by the news.  As the Patriots missed the kick, I remember my father complaining the Cosell had jinxed the Pats somehow.

But Cosell was right in his timeless words, “let us remember that this is just a game for tonight an unspeakable tragedy occurred.”

This tragic day, however, is also the birthday of a number of artists in music and otherwise.

Camille Claudel

Phil Collen (Def Leppard)

Sammy Davis, Jr.

Nicki Minaj

Jim Morrison

Sinead O’Connor

Diego Rivera
